In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to the crowds and His disciples about the religious leaders of His time. He warns them not to follow the example of the Pharisees, who say all the right things but don’t practice what they preach. These leaders love to be seen as important and holy, but their actions don’t match their words. Instead of seeking recognition and praise, Jesus calls His followers to a different way of living—one of humility and service. He teaches, “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
What Does This Mean for Us?
It’s easy to want recognition for the good things we do. We might want to be noticed for helping others, working hard, or being a good person. But Jesus reminds us that true greatness doesn’t come from titles, attention, or praise—it comes from serving others with a humble heart.
Think about a teacher who truly cares about their students, not just about getting awards or compliments. Or a friend who helps you without expecting anything in return. These people show us what real humility looks like. Jesus invites us to live this way, putting others before ourselves and letting our actions speak louder than our words.
Living the Gospel This Week
How can we live out this message in our daily lives? Here are a few ideas:
- Listen more, talk less. Instead of trying to impress others, take time to listen and understand them.
- Help without seeking credit. Do something kind—help a neighbor, encourage a friend, or do a chore at home—without expecting recognition.
- Pray for a humble heart. Ask God to help you see where you can serve others with love and humility.
A Prayer for Humility
Lord Jesus, You showed us that true greatness comes from serving others with love. Help us to follow Your example, to be humble in our words and actions, and to seek Your glory rather than our own. Teach us to love others the way You love us. Amen.
This week, take a moment to reflect: Am I seeking recognition, or am I serving with a humble heart? Let’s ask God to help us grow in humility and love!
